How Does Data Collection Help with Keeping Tracks of Your Child's Progress

The collection and analysis of data is a crucial component of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in clinical and educational settings. Clinicians, practitioners, and educational instructors need data to understand the function of behaviors concerning your child. With the collection of this data, they can then create intervention strategies for dealing with undesirable behavior.

Repeated data collection and observation is the primary method used in a clinical setting for assessing behavior change. The exact data collection method utilized to track, analyze, and record all of this data will depend upon the goals for treating your child's autistic behaviors. For example, teaching new social skills may require different data collection methods than changing education and learning behaviors.

Luckily, many data collection methodologies are available to assist ABA professionals in leveraging continuous data collection to achieve positive changes within your child's therapy and achieve goals in behavior modification.

Clinicians, therapists, and autism educators use data to create actionable behavioral support strategies. Record keeping is essential whether you want to decrease negative behaviors (e.g., tantrums, violence, aggression, etc.) or increase positive behaviors (e.g., socialization, sharing, etc.). The therapist can then form hypotheses and adjust their program strategy throughout your time with a child.

It is this repetition of analyzing and recording behaviors that will ensure the success of the program! Over time, you and your child's clinician can make decisions regarding your child's care based on facts and not hunches.
